How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Do You Need?
The honest answer from a London clinic that does things differently.
If you're Googling "how many sessions of laser hair removal do I need" you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get at Laser Me Out, and honestly, you deserve a straight answer before you commit your time and money.
The short version? Most people need 6 to 10 sessions for significant hair reduction. But the real answer depends on your body, your hair, and importantly how well your clinic prepares your skin before each session. Here's everything you need to know, written by the team who actually does this every single day at our clinics in London (Marylebone) and Birmingham (Hagley Road).
Why You Need More Than One Session
This bit is important because it explains everything else.
Your hair doesn't all grow at the same time. Each follicle moves through four phases growth (anagen), transition (catagen), rest (telogen), and shedding (exogen). Laser hair removal only works on hair that's in the active growth phase, because that's when the follicle is connected to the root and absorbing the laser energy.
At any given time, only about 15 to 25 percent of your hair is in this active phase. So even a perfect session can only treat a fraction of your hair. That's why you need multiple sessions spaced apart; you're catching different follicles each time as they cycle into growth mode.
This isn't a limitation of your clinic or your laser machine. It's biology.
How Many Sessions By Body Area
Not all hair is created equal. Thicker, coarser hair in less hormonal areas tends to respond faster. Finer hair in hormone-driven areas can be more stubborn.
Here's what we typically see at Laser Me Out:
Underarms: 6 to 8 sessions. Hair here is usually dark and coarse, which responds brilliantly to laser. Many clients see noticeable thinning after just 2 or 3 sessions.
Bikini and Hollywood: 6 to 10 sessions. This is a hormonal area, so regrowth can be influenced by your cycle, contraception, and conditions like PCOS. We offer both standard bikini and full Hollywood laser hair removal at our London and Birmingham clinics. Not sure which is right for you? Our bikini hair removal guide breaks down all the options.
Full legs: 6 to 8 sessions. Legs tend to respond well because the hair is usually coarse enough for the laser to target efficiently. You'll often see patchy regrowth from session 3 or 4 onwards. Struggling with strawberry legs? Laser can help with that too.
Upper lip and chin: 8 to 12 sessions. Facial hair is often finer and more hormonally driven, which means it can take longer to see full results. If you have PCOS, you may need additional sessions or ongoing maintenance we've written a detailed guide on PCOS facial hair and why it's harder to treat. We also have a dedicated PCOS membership for exactly this reason.
Back and chest (men): 8 to 12 sessions. Men's body hair is typically denser and deeper-rooted, so it needs more sessions. The good news is that hair in these areas usually responds very well to our Soprano Titanium laser.
Arms and forearms: 6 to 8 sessions. Results here are usually straightforward, especially if the hair is dark.
These are ranges, not guarantees. Your therapist will give you a more accurate estimate during your consultation and patch test, based on your actual skin tone, hair type, and medical history.
What Affects How Many Sessions You'll Need
Several factors influence your total session count. Understanding these helps you set realistic expectations from day one.
Your hair colour and thickness. Darker, coarser hair absorbs laser energy more effectively because it contains more melanin. If your hair is very fine, light brown, or blonde, you may need more sessions. Red hair? We've covered that too read our guide on laser hair removal for redheads. Our Soprano Titanium system can handle lighter and finer hair better than older machines, but biology still plays a role.
Your skin tone. At Laser Me Out, we use the Soprano Titanium, which is safe and effective across all skin tones including darker and melanin-rich skin. The system combines multiple wavelengths (including Nd:YAG at 1064nm) to treat deeper skin tones safely. We've written dedicated guides for South Asian skin, Indian skin, Asian skin (Fitzpatrick IV–V), and darker skin tones if you want more detail.
Hormones and PCOS. If you have polycystic ovary syndrome or other hormonal conditions, your body may continue producing new hair growth even after completing a course. Not sure if PCOS is affecting you? Check out our post on 5 signs you might have PCOS. We also explain how many laser sessions PCOS clients typically need and why PCOS hirsutism causes hair to keep coming back. Our founder, Shireen, has PCOS herself read her story and what actually works.
The laser machine being used. Not all lasers are equal. The Soprano Titanium is a medical-grade system that delivers three wavelengths simultaneously Alexandrite (755nm), Diode (810nm), and Nd:YAG (1064nm). This means it can target hair at different depths and across different skin tones in a single pass. Cheaper machines using a single wavelength often need more sessions to achieve the same results. How well your skin is prepped. This is where Laser Me Out genuinely does something different from other clinics. More on this below.
The LMO Difference: Why Prep Matters More Than People Think
Here's something most laser clinics don't talk about: skin preparation directly affects how many sessions you'll need.
At Laser Me Out, every treatment includes our signature dry brushing prep step. Before the laser touches your skin, your therapist dry brushes the treatment area. This removes dead skin cells, reduces the chance of ingrown hairs, and improves circulation — which means the laser light can penetrate deeper and reach more follicles.
Why does this matter for session count? Because if dead skin and buildup are blocking the laser's path, some follicles get missed. Those missed follicles then need to be caught in a later session. Better prep means fewer missed follicles, which means more efficient treatments and potentially fewer sessions overall.
We also offer add-on shaving as part of your appointment, so you don't have to worry about prepping at home. Not sure how to shave before laser? We've got a step-by-step guide on how to shave your face before laser hair removal and a shaving routine for sensitive skin, eczema and PCOS. These two steps combined dry brushing plus proper shaving ensure you get the absolute most out of every single session.
No other clinic in London or Birmingham includes this as standard.
How Long Between Sessions?
Spacing matters just as much as the total number of sessions. Go too soon and you're treating the same hairs again. Wait too long and you miss the window.
For the face, we recommend every 4 to 6 weeks facial hair cycles faster.
For the body, we recommend every 6 to 8 weeks body hair cycles more slowly, so you need to give new growth time to appear.
Going on holiday mid-course? Don't panic read our guide on whether it's safe to travel between laser sessions. Your therapist will adjust this timeline based on how you're responding. Consistency is key — sticking to your schedule gives you the best chance of finishing your course in the fewest sessions possible.
What Happens After You Finish Your Course?
After completing 6 to 10 sessions, most clients see a 70 to 90 percent reduction in hair growth. The remaining hair is usually much finer, lighter, and slower-growing than before. We go deeper into this question in our blog on whether laser hair removal is really permanent.
However, laser hair removal is technically classed as permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. Some regrowth can happen over time due to hormonal changes, ageing, medication, or life events like pregnancy. Speaking of which if you're expecting, read our guide on laser hair removal during pregnancy.
That's why we recommend maintenance sessions usually once or twice a year to keep things smooth. Think of it like a dental check-up for your skin. A quick top-up keeps you on track without starting from scratch.
For PCOS clients, maintenance may be more frequent, and our membership plan is designed to make this affordable and stress-free.
Session-by-Session: What to Expect at Laser Me Out
Session 1: Consultation, patch test, and your first treatment. You'll discuss your goals, medical history, and get a personalised plan. New to this? Read our full guide on what happens at your first laser hair removal consultation. Some clients see a slight reduction after the first session, but don't expect dramatic results yet.
Sessions 2 to 3: You'll start noticing patchy regrowth and slower growth in some areas. Hair that does grow back may feel finer. This is the shedding phase working — treated hairs fall out over 1 to 3 weeks after each session.
Sessions 4 to 5: This is where it starts to feel real. Most clients notice they can go much longer without shaving. The treatment areas look noticeably thinner.
Sessions 6 to 8: Significant reduction. Many clients are close to their goal by this point, especially on areas like underarms and legs. Worried about pain? Most clients find it gets easier with each session as the hair thins.
Sessions 8 to 10+: Fine-tuning. Your therapist will focus on any remaining stubborn patches. Hormonal areas like the face or bikini may still need a few more rounds. If your results feel slower than expected, have a read of our blog on why laser hair removal might not be working and what to do about it.
How Does Laser Me Out Compare on Cost?
We offer 6-session packages across all treatment areas, with transparent pricing and no hidden fees. When you factor in the cost of waxing or shaving over 5 to 10 years — razors, shaving cream, waxing appointments, ingrown hair treatments — laser hair removal works out significantly cheaper in the long run. We've done the maths in our blog on whether laser hair removal is worth it vs waxing and shaving, and also compared lifetime laser costs against razors and waxing.
We also offer 0% finance options so you can spread the cost. You can view our full pricing on our website or book a free consultation at either our London or Birmingham clinic.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions for Brazilian or Hollywood laser?
Most clients need 6 to 10 sessions for a Brazilian or Hollywood. This is a hormonal area, so some clients may need maintenance sessions afterwards. Read our full Hollywood laser hair removal guide or check out the Hollywood cost, pain, and sessions breakdown.
Does laser hair removal work on darker skin?
Yes. Our Soprano Titanium laser is safe for all skin tones, including Fitzpatrick types IV to VI. The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength is specifically designed for melanin-rich skin. We've written extensively about laser for South Asian, Indian, and darker skin tones — check out our other blog posts for detailed guides.
Does PCOS mean I'll need more sessions?
Usually, yes. PCOS can cause ongoing hormonal hair growth, which means your body may produce new hair even after completing a full course. Our PCOS membership offers unlimited laser treatments, a dedicated consultation with our founder Shireen, and ongoing support.
Can I do laser on tanned skin?
Most clinics say no. We say yes. The Soprano Titanium can safely treat tanned skin something many older laser systems can't do. Read our full guide on laser hair removal for tanned skin for more details.
How many sessions for men's laser hair removal?
Men typically need 8 to 12 sessions, particularly for areas like the back, chest, and beard line. Hair in these areas is usually thicker and deeper-rooted. We treat men at both our London and Birmingham clinics.
Is there any downtime between sessions?
No. You can go about your day normally after treatment. We recommend avoiding hot baths, heavy exercise, and direct sun for 24 to 48 hours. Full aftercare guidance is provided at every session.
What's the difference between IPL and laser?
IPL uses broad-spectrum light, while laser uses a focused, single-wavelength beam. Professional laser systems like our Soprano Titanium are more powerful, more precise, and generally require fewer sessions than at-home IPL devices. We've covered this in detail in our IPL vs laser blog post.
