Can You Get Laser Hair Removal on Tanned Skin? (Yes Here's How)
Can You Get Laser Hair Removal on Tanned Skin?
You've finally committed. You've done the research, you've picked your areas, you're mentally ready to break up with your razor for good. You book a consultation. And then the clinic tells you to come back in six weeks because you went to Marbella last weekend.
Sound familiar? It's one of the most annoying things about laser hair removal and it's the number one question we get asked at Laser Me Out: can I actually get laser done if I've got a tan?
The short answer: yes, you can. But there's a catch. And it's all about the type of tan and the type of laser.
Why Most Laser Clinics Won't Touch Tanned Skin
Here's the deal. Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin the pigment that gives your hair its colour. The laser finds that pigment, heats it up, and destroys the follicle so the hair can't grow back.
But melanin isn't just in your hair. It's in your skin too. And when you've been in the sun, your skin produces more melanin to protect itself. That's literally what a tan is.
With traditional laser machines the ones most clinics in London still use the laser can't always tell the difference between the melanin in your hair and the melanin in your freshly tanned skin. When the laser gets confused, bad things happen: burns, blistering, dark patches, light patches, and a whole lot of wasted money. If you want the full breakdown of what can and can't happen, we've covered it in our side effects — myths, facts & FAQs post.
That's why the majority of clinics will tell you to wait four to six weeks after any significant sun exposure. It's not a random rule with their equipment, it's genuinely unsafe to do otherwise.
But here's the thing. Not all laser machines are created equal.
How Our Soprano Titanium Treats Tanned Skin Safely
At Laser Me Out, we use the Soprano Titanium by Alma and this is where things get interesting.
Traditional lasers fire a single, intense pulse of energy at your skin. That high-energy blast is exactly what causes problems on tanned skin, because it doesn't discriminate well between hair and skin pigment.
The Soprano Titanium takes a completely different approach. It uses SHR (Super Hair Removal) technology, which works by delivering lots of low-energy pulses in rapid succession. Instead of one big zap, it gradually builds up heat in the hair follicle gently and precisely until the follicle is treated without frying your skin in the process.
Think of it like this. Traditional lasers are like putting a blowtorch to a marshmallow quick, intense, and easy to burn. SHR is more like slowly toasting it over warm embers. Same result, way less drama.
On top of the SHR method, the Soprano Titanium fires three wavelengths at the same time:
Alexandrite (755nm) picks up a wide range of hair types, including finer, lighter hair. Speed Diode (810nm) penetrates deeper into the follicle and handles medium skin tones beautifully. Nd:YAG (1064nm) goes the deepest and is specifically designed to be safe on darker and tanned skin.
We've done a full head-to-head comparison of how the Soprano Titanium stacks up against other machines in our Soprano Titanium vs other lasers guide worth a read if you're weighing up your options.
All three wavelengths fire simultaneously, covering every layer of the follicle in one pass. And the built-in ICE Plus cooling system keeps your skin cool throughout, so you don't feel a thing.
The result? We can safely and effectively treat naturally tanned skin something most London clinics simply cannot offer.
The One Type of Tan We Can't Treat (and Why)
Now, before anyone books in straight from the spray tan booth let's be really clear on this.
Natural tan from the sun? Yes. Come in.
Fake tan? Absolutely not.
And this isn't a Soprano Titanium limitation no laser machine on earth should be used over fake tan. Here's why.
A spray tan, gradual tanner, or tinted moisturiser coats the surface of your skin with chemicals that mimic the look of melanin. But it's not real melanin it's an artificial layer sitting on top of your skin. The laser reacts unpredictably with it. Energy absorption becomes uneven. Some areas absorb too much (hello, burns), other areas absorb too little (hello, wasted session). And the chemical residue can physically block the laser from reaching the follicle.
We've seen clients turn up with what they thought was a faded spray tan, only for the laser to pick it up in patches they couldn't see. It's not worth the risk.
Here's what you need to do if you've got fake tan:
Stop applying it at least two weeks before your appointment. That includes spray tans, gradual tanners, tinted body lotions, bronzing drops all of it.
Exfoliate properly. Focus on the areas you're having treated. Use a mitt or scrub and pay extra attention to your elbows, knees, ankles, and any creases where fake tan likes to cling.
Skip the shimmer on the day. Body oils, illuminating lotions, anything with a tint leave it at home.
If there's still fake tan visible when you arrive, we'll reschedule. We know that's frustrating, but we'd rather delay your session than compromise your skin or your results.
"But I Just Got Back from Holiday…"
This is the one we hear all the time especially between May and October. You've been away, you look amazing, you're feeling great, and you don't want to wait six weeks to continue your laser course.
With the Soprano Titanium, you don't have to. We've written a whole guide on travelling during your laser course if you want the full picture, but here's the short version.
Once any redness or sun-induced inflammation has settled usually a few days to a week you can come in for treatment. We'll always assess your skin before we start and adjust the laser settings based on your current tone on the day. That's part of our standard process.
Compare that to clinics using older machines, where you're typically looking at a four-to-six-week wait after any sun exposure. During summer, that can mean missing multiple sessions and throwing your whole treatment schedule off track.
At LMO, we've designed our approach so your laser journey doesn't have to revolve around the weather or your travel plans. Got a holiday booked mid-course? No stress. We'll work around it.
What We Actually See at the Clinic
We're not just talking theory here. We treat clients with tans every single week and we have done since we opened in 2022.
A lot of our clients have South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean skin tones. Their natural complexion already has higher melanin levels, and many of them tan easily on top of that. If that's you, have a look at our guides on laser hair removal for Indian skin and laser hair removal for Asian skin (Fitzpatrick IV–V) we go deep on which wavelengths work best and why. For these clients especially, the Soprano Titanium isn't just a nice-to-have it's essential. Older laser systems are genuinely risky on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin, and adding a tan on top makes it worse.
We also have clients who are simply outdoorsy people they run, they cycle, they sit in the garden. They don't want to live like a vampire for six months just to get smooth legs. With our technology, they don't have to.
And here's something people don't always think about: our dry brushing prep step makes a real difference too. Before we laser, we dry brush the treatment area. This exfoliates dead skin, brings ingrown hairs to the surface, and helps the laser energy penetrate more effectively. Better prep means better results — especially on tanned skin where every bit of precision counts.
What Happens After Your Session
Whether your skin is tanned or not, the aftercare is the same:
Avoid direct sun on the treated area for at least 48 hours. Your skin is more sensitive immediately after laser, and UV exposure can cause pigmentation changes.
Wear SPF 30 or higher on any exposed treated areas yes, even on overcast London days.
No hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, or intense workouts for 24–48 hours. Anything that heats your skin up can cause irritation.
Don't exfoliate the treated area for a few days. Let your skin settle first.
Keep moisturising. Hydrated skin recovers faster and responds better to your next session.
Follow those steps and you'll be golden literally and figuratively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get laser hair removal if I have a tan?
Yes if the clinic uses the right technology. At Laser Me Out, our Soprano Titanium is FDA-approved for all skin types including naturally tanned skin. We adjust settings based on your skin tone at every session.
Do I need to avoid the sun completely during my laser course?
No. You need to protect the treated area from prolonged sun exposure for 48 hours after each session, and wear SPF. But you don't need to avoid the sun altogether especially with the Soprano Titanium, which can handle natural tans.
Why can't I have laser over fake tan?
Fake tan creates an artificial chemical layer on your skin that interferes with how the laser energy is absorbed. This can cause burns, patchy results, or ineffective treatment. It must be fully removed at least two weeks before your session.
How long after sunbathing can I have laser?
With the Soprano Titanium, you just need to wait until any redness or sunburn has fully settled usually a few days to one week. With older laser systems, clinics typically require four to six weeks.
Is laser on tanned skin more painful?
Not with the Soprano Titanium. The SHR method combined with ICE Plus cooling keeps the treatment virtually painless, regardless of your skin tone.
Does laser work differently on tanned skin?
The settings may be adjusted slightly and treatment may take marginally longer, as the laser works more gently to reach the follicle without affecting the surrounding skin. But the results are the same — a 60–80% reduction in hair growth over six to eight sessions.
I have naturally dark skin and tan easily is laser safe for me?
Yes. The Soprano Titanium is specifically designed for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I–VI). The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength goes deep into the follicle without interacting with surface melanin, making it the safest option for darker skin tones. Read our full guide on the best laser hair removal for dark skin for more detail.
Can I start laser in summer?
You can start any time of year at Laser Me Out. You don't need to wait for winter. Just keep up your SPF, follow your aftercare, and enjoy your summer while your sessions do the work.
