How Many Laser Sessions Do You Need for PCOS?
Quick Answer
Most PCOS clients need 8–12 sessions, not the standard 6 and ongoing maintenance after that. This isn't because laser doesn't work. It's because PCOS keeps stimulating new follicles. This guide walks you through every stage of thejourney, so nothing catches you off guard. You've read Shireen's story how our founder spent years managing PCOS hair before laser changed everything. That story gets a lot of messages. And the question we see most in the replies is always some version of the same thing:
"I've had 6 sessions and my hair is still coming back. Is laser even working for me?"
If that's you you're not failing at laser hair removal. You're experiencing PCOS. And there's a very specific reason it works differently for you than the standard '6 sessions and done' promise you've probably seen advertised. This guide explains exactly what happens at every session, why PCOS changes the timeline, and how to know your treatment is actually working even when it doesn't feel like it.
Why PCOS Changes the Laser Timeline
Standard laser courses are designed around a predictable hair growth cycle. Treat every 6–8 weeks, follicle in its active phase, and by session 6 you've covered most of the field. PCOS breaks that model. Because PCOS causes your body to overproduce and rogens male hormones like testosterone your skin is continuously signalling new hair follicles to activate. Laser permanently reduces the follicles it treats. But PCOS keeps creating new ones. You're not just clearing a field. You're clearing a field while the other end is still growing.
This is why PCOS clients typically need:
• 8–12 sessions in the initial course rather than 6
• Shorter intervals between sessions every 4–5 weeks rather than 6–8
• Maintenance sessions every few months once the main course is complete
None of this means laser doesn't work for PCOS. It means it works on PCOS terms —and knowing those terms upfront makes the whole journey far less frustrating.
Session by Session: Your Honest PCOS Timeline
Session 1 The starting point
When: 4–6 weeks after your consultation patch test
What happens: The laser targets follicles in their active (anagen) growth phase. It doesn't destroy every hair in one go it begins systematically disrupting follicle activity across the treatment area.
Hair status: Most hair looks unchanged immediately after. Over the next 1–3 weeks, treated hairs begin to shed they'll wipe or wash away rather than grow. Some redness is normal and usually settles within 24 hours.
PCOS note: Don't expect dramatic change yet. If you've been waxing or threading, you need at least 4 weeks of shaving-only growth beforehand so the hair root is intact for the laser to target.
Session 2 First signs of shedding
When: 4–5 weeks after session 1
What happens: Treated hairs from session 1 continue shedding and new follicles in the active phase are targeted. You may notice patches clearing more than others — this is normal and reflects which hairs were in the right phase during session 1.
Hair status: Patchy, uneven shedding. Some areas noticeably clearer. Others look similar to before. This unevenness is temporary — it evens out over the course.
PCOS note: Compare photos from before session 1, not from the shedding peak. Hair density and regrowth speed are your real benchmarks at this stage, not how the area looks on any single day.
Session 3 The discouraging phase and why it is not failure
When: 4–5 weeks after session 2
What happens: New hair visibly regrows. For PCOS clients, this session often feels like going backwards. It isn't. The hair you're seeing came from follicles that were dormant during sessions 1 and 2 — now they're active and being targeted for the first time.
Hair status: Regrowth is nearly always finer and lighter than pre-treatment hair, even if density feels similar. Look closely — this is the most telling sign that the laser is working.
PCOS note: This is the most common drop-off point for PCOS clients who assume treatment has failed. The correct response is to keep going. You are not back to square one. You are targeting a new layer of follicles.
Session 4 Visible, meaningful progress
When: 4–5 weeks after session 3
What happens: Most PCOS clients notice a genuine shift by session 4. Hormonal areas (chin, upper lip, stomach line) are still more active, but overall hair density is meaningfully reduced. The interval between needing to shave or manage the area is getting longer.
Hair status: Hair is finer and patchier. Fast-growing areas are starting to slow down. The mental load of daily management noticeably reduces for most clients.
PCOS note: If you're on hormonal medication the pill, spironolactone, Metformin note whether any recent changes to your dose or prescription are affecting regrowth speed. This is useful information for your practitioner.
Session 5–6 Building real momentum
When: Every 4–5 weeks
What happens: Cumulative results become clearly visible. Most clients at this stage are shaving far less frequently or not at all in treated areas. Hair density is significantly reduced and regrowth intervals are lengthening noticeably.
Hair status: Some areas may feel essentially complete underarms, legs, bikini line tend to respond fastest. Facial and stomach hair driven by PCOS hormones will lag behind. This is expected.
PCOS note: Don't stop here even if some areas look clear. PCOS-affected areas need the full extended course to achieve results that hold. Stopping at 6 for PCOS clients often means regrowth returns faster and more densely.
Session 7–12 The PCOS extended course where lasting results are built
When: Every 4–5 weeks this is where your plan separates from a standard course
What happens: Sessions 7–12 are where PCOS clients build the deep, sustained results that hold long term. Hair density continues falling. Shedding becomes more complete and consistent. Regrowth intervals stretch from weeks to months in most treated areas.
Hair status: Clinical evidence shows PCOS clients who complete extended courses beyond session 6 achieve significantly longer hair-free intervals and report substantially higher satisfaction. The difference between stopping at 6 and completing 10–12 is not marginal it is significant.
PCOS note: If your PCOS is being managed medically alongside your laser course, your results in this phase will likely be better than laser alone. Hormonal regulation and laser work synergistically the combination reduces both existing hair and the rate of new follicle stimulation.
After Your Course: What PCOS MaintenanceActually Looks Like
Completing your initial course doesn't mean you're done forever but it does mean you're in a completely different place to where you started. PCOS maintenance is about staying ahead of new hormonal growth, not repeating the full process.

Key point: a maintenance session is not a sign that your results failed. It means PCOS has stimulated new follicles since your last treatment. The follicles you already treated are still permanently reduced. You're managing new activity, not undoing old results.
How to Know Your Treatment Is Working
Because PCOS results are non-linear, week-to-week comparison will drive you mad. Here's how to actuallytrack progress:
• Photograph the same area in the same light before session 1 and before every third session not betweensessions
• Track how often you need to shave, not how the area looks on any given day
• Notice whether regrowth is getting finer and lighter this is a stronger indicator than density alone
• Track how long it takes before you feel you need to manage the area if that interval is growing, laser is working
Real result: one of our PCOS clients went from shaving her chin daily to needing tomanage it once every three weeks after completing her course. That's not acosmetic improvement. That's a quality of life change.
Frequently Asked Questions
I've had 4 sessions and my hair is still coming back should I stop?
No and this is genuinely themost important thing in this entire blog. Four sessions is not enough to judge PCOS results. You're likely in the phase where dormant follicles are becoming active for the first time. Most PCOS clients don't see decisiveresults until sessions 6–8. Compare your hair now to before session 1 finer, patchier, slower-growing is the benchmark, not 'completely gone'.
Why is my chin and upper lip hair so much worse than my legs and underarms?
Because facial hair is the most androgen-sensitive area on the body. PCOS androgens are most concentrated in their effect on the face which means the chin, upper lip, and jawline aretypically the last areas to fully respond and the most likely to need ongoing maintenance. This is not a problem with the laser or your skin. It's the biology of PCOS. Keep going.
My PCOS isn't controlled yet is it worth starting laser?
Yes. There is no benefit to waiting. Laser will still permanently reduce existing hair regardless of yourcurrent hormonal state. You may need more maintenance sessions if PCOS is unmanaged, but starting earlier means earlier relief. You don't need a'fixed' PCOS to benefit from laser you just need to understand the maintenance picture.
Will stopping the pill affect my laser results?
Yes, potentially. Coming off the pill removes an androgen-suppressing effect, which can trigger a flare-up ofnew hair growth including in areas that had already cleared. This is one of the most common triggers for new PCOS growth in treated areas. If you'replanning to stop the pill, let your practitioner know so you can time a maintenance session proactively rather than reactively.
Can I speed up results by coming in more frequently?
Not significantly and coming intoo frequently can actually be counterproductive. Laser only works on folliclesin their active growth phase. Coming in before hair has had time to re-enterthat phase means the laser has less to target. The 4–5 week interval for PCOS clients is specifically calibrated to match the hormonal hair cycle. Patience between sessions matters as much as the sessions themselves.
