What Happens at Your First Laser Hair Removal Consultation
Quick take
Your consultation is the very first step in your laser journey. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s where we make sure laser is safe for you, will give you results, and fits your goals.
We’ll look at your skin and hair, talk through your medical background, do a patch test, and then map out a plan. Simple, safe, and tailored to you.
👉 At Laser Me Out, consultations are free and always include your patch test.
Why the consultation matters
Laser works when two things line up: the hair has enough pigment, and the settings match your skin type. Done right, it’s safe and effective. Done wrong, it can cause burns or colour changes.
That’s why consultations are never skipped. It’s how we:
- Confirm you’re a good candidate.
- Set safe laser parameters.
- Give you realistic expectations (number of sessions, results).
It’s also your chance to ask every question on your mind.
Step 1: Forms and a short chat
We’ll start by asking about:
- Medications (current and recent)
- Any sun exposure or fake tan
- Hair removal habits (waxing, threading, epilation)
- Skin conditions or active breakouts
⚠️ Some medicines make skin more light-sensitive. Recent tanning also raises risk. If that’s the case, we may delay treatment until it’s safe.
👉 Tip: Don’t shave the area on the day of your consultation. We need to see your natural hair growth to judge thickness and colour. Shaving should only be done 24 hours before your first full treatment, not before your consult.
Step 2: Skin and hair assessment
Your therapist will check:
- Skin phototype using the Fitzpatrick scale (I to VI)
- Hair colour, thickness, and density
- Any tattoos, moles, or scars in the area
This matters because:
- Darker, coarser hair responds fastest.
- Blonde, grey, or red hairs don’t respond (laser needs pigment). For these, electrolysis is better.
- The Fitzpatrick type helps us set safe energy levels, especially for melanin-rich skin.
Step 3: Patch test
We always perform a patch test. It’s a tiny test shot with the laser on the area you want treated.
This tells us two things:
- How your skin reacts to the laser.
- Which settings give you the safest, most effective outcome.
You’ll need to wait 24–48 hours after your patch test before we can start your first session. This UK safety guideline ensures your skin has time to show any reaction.
What you might feel: warmth or a quick snap. Most clients compare it to a rubber band flick or a warm massage, especially with the Soprano Titanium system.
Normal responses: mild redness, tingling, or small follicle swelling — all settle in hours.
Step 4: Your treatment plan
After the patch test, we’ll map your plan:
- Sessions: most clients need 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
- Results: expect about 10–20% hair reduction per session. After the full course, many clients see long-term smoothness.
- Maintenance: some fine hairs can return later, so 1–2 top-ups per year keep results at their best.
- Costs: we’ll walk through single areas vs bundles like Pick & Mix or full-body packages.
What we use at Laser Me Out
We use Soprano Titanium, a professional diode platform. It combines three wavelengths (755, 810, 1064 nm) and uses an in-motion technique with contact cooling.
- The 1064 nm wavelength penetrates deeper with less melanin absorption — safer for darker skin tones.
- The cooling technology makes treatments more comfortable.
Is it safe for darker skin?
Yes. With the right device and settings, laser is safe for Fitzpatrick V–VI skin. Evidence supports diode and Nd:YAG approaches for melanin-rich skin. That’s why consultation and patch testing are non-negotiable.
Consultations for men
Laser isn’t just for women. Men often book consultations for:
- Back and shoulders
- Chest and stomach
- Beard line (to prevent ingrowns)
The process is exactly the same: safe, simple, and tailored to your goals.
Pre-care before your consult
- Avoid sunbeds or tanning products.
- Don’t wax, thread, or epilate for 4 weeks before.
- Don’t shave the area on the day of your consult (we need to see your natural growth).
- Bring a list of your medications and skincare products.
Aftercare basics
After your patch test or future treatments:
- Use cool packs and gentle moisturiser if needed.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, or heavy workouts for 24–48 hours.
- Keep the area out of direct sun and wear SPF daily.
Common myths we clear up
Myth: Laser works in one go.
Truth: Hair grows in cycles. Multiple sessions are needed.
Myth: It isn’t safe for dark skin.
Truth: With modern diode lasers like Soprano Titanium, it’s safe and effective when used by trained staff.
Myth: It’s very painful.
Truth: Most clients describe warmth or a mild snap. Cooling and in-motion delivery reduce discomfort.
Myth: Results are permanent forever.
Truth: Laser gives long-term reduction. Maintenance top-ups may be needed as hormones and hair cycles change.
Who should wait
We may delay or adapt treatment if you have:
- Recent tanning or sunburn on the area
- Active skin infection, eczema, or open wounds
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Light-sensitive epilepsy
- Recent use of certain medicines or skincare actives
How long do results last?
Laser results are long-lasting. Most clients enjoy smoothness for months or years, with only light regrowth that is finer and slower. With top-ups once or twice a year, results can be maintained long term.
