What Really Happens at Your First Laser Hair Removal Consultation: A London First-Timer's Guide
Booking your first laser hair removal appointment can feel like a big deal. Will it hurt? What do they actually do? Is it awkward? If those questions have been quietly talking you out of booking, this one's for you.
We're walking you through exactly what happens at your first consultation and patch test at our London clinic — every step, no mystery, no surprises. Think of it as the honest, behind-the-scenes guide we wish every first-timer had before they walked in. By the end, we're pretty confident those nerves will feel a whole lot smaller.
The short version (if you're in a hurry)
Your first visit is two simple parts: a consultation, where you chat with a therapist and fill in a quick health form, and a patch test, where we test the laser on a small area to check how your skin responds. It's quick, it's relaxed, and there's absolutely no pressure to commit to anything. That's it.

Step 1: Walking in (it doesn't feel like a clinic)
The moment you step into our London clinic, we hope you notice it doesn't feel cold or clinical. No stark white walls or waiting-room dread. Instead: colour, plants, and a warm, welcoming space designed to feel calm rather than intimidating. Settle in, help yourself to a tea, water or a cookie, and take a breath. The hard part — deciding to book — is already behind you.
Step 2: A quick health form
Before your consultation, we'll ask you to fill in a short form covering your medical history and any health conditions, past or present. It may feel like a lot of questions, but the reason is simple: we want to be completely sure that laser is safe and suitable for you before we do anything. Your safety comes first, always.
Step 3: Meeting your therapist
Once your form's done, your therapist will collect you and walk you up to the treatment room — and this is usually where the nerves start to melt away.
They'll talk you through everything: how the laser works, why our Soprano technology is designed to be comfortable and virtually pain-free, and exactly what your before and after care involves — when to shave, what to avoid, and how to care for your skin between sessions.
Here's what clients tell us they value most: it never feels rushed, and it never feels like a sales pitch. The whole point of your consultation is to educate you, so you can make a confident, informed decision — not to push you into anything.
Step 4: The patch test
This is the bit everyone builds up in their head — and the bit that turns out to be the easiest. Your therapist will step out so you can change into a gown (and yes, our branded Laser Me Out gowns are a little touch we're quietly obsessed with). Then comes the test itself: we shave a small section of each area you'd like treated and test the laser on that patch to see how your skin reacts.
It does two important things — confirms the right settings for your skin tone and type, and lets you experience exactly what laser feels like before you commit to a full course. Spoiler: most people are surprised by how gentle it is.
"But does it actually hurt?"
The question on everyone's mind. You've probably heard the horror stories about numbing cream and gritted teeth. The honest truth from our clients? The most you'll typically feel is a gentle warmth. You can tell something's happening, but it's nothing like the pain people brace themselves for. Most first-timers walk out genuinely surprised at how quick and easy the whole thing was.
A quick but important note on shaving
Here's the one thing that catches first-timers off guard: please don't shave the area for one to two weeks before your consultation. It feels counterintuitive, we know — but leaving the hair lets your therapist properly assess your growth and build the right plan for you.
And if that's making you feel self-conscious? Please don't. Our therapists do this every single day; to them it's completely routine, and there is zero judgement, ever. Honestly, most clients say this is the exact moment they finally relax.
How to prepare for your consultation
A few simple things to make your first visit smooth:
- Don't shave the treatment area for 1–2 weeks beforehand.
- Avoid fake tan and sun exposure on the area in the lead-up — laser works best on untanned skin.
- Skip waxing, plucking and epilating for at least a few weeks before, as these remove the hair root the laser targets.
- Come as you are — no need to do anything special. Just arrive a few minutes early so you've got time to fill in your form.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to shave before my consultation? No — the opposite. Avoid shaving the area for one to two weeks beforehand so your therapist can assess your hair growth.
Does laser hair removal hurt? For most people, no. With our Soprano technology the most you'll usually feel is a gentle warmth, not the sharp pain many expect.
Why do I need a patch test?It lets us check how your skin responds and dial in the correct settings before your full treatments — it's a safety and comfort step, and it's standard practice.
Is laser hair removal safe for my skin tone? Our Soprano technology is suitable for a wide range of skin tones. Your therapist will confirm exactly what's right for you at your consultation.
How long does the first appointment take?Less time than most people expect. Your consultation and patch test are designed to be quick and relaxed, with plenty of room for questions.
How do I book? You can book your consultation and patch test online in just a couple of taps — see the link below.
