Laser Hair Removal Before Your Wedding
When to start, when to stop, and why "wait until winter" is advice from clinics that cannot treat your skin.
Here is the thing most bridal beauty guides get wrong.
They tell you to start laser hair removal in winter. The reasoning sounds sensible: laser targets pigment, tanned skin has more pigment, so treat when nobody is tanned. Plenty of London clinics build their entire bridal advice around it.
That advice exists because of the machine, not because of you. Older laser platforms genuinely struggle with tanned and melanin-rich skin, so the workaround is to tell brides to wait. If you have deeper skin naturally, some clinics will tell you to wait indefinitely.
We use the Alma Soprano Titanium, which combines 755nm, 810nm and 1064nm wavelengths with contact cooling. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is the one designed for melanin-rich skin, and it is the reason a summer holiday or a naturally deeper skin tone is a conversation at your consultation rather than an automatic no.
So the honest bridal timeline is not "start in winter." It is "start early, and tell us everything that is in your diary."
Start earlier than feels necessary
Most UK weddings happen in August, then June, July and September. The average engagement runs around eighteen months, which means most couples have plenty of time and spend a good chunk of it not thinking about this at all.
The window that works for laser is 9 to 12 months.
That is not a sales number. It is what a full course plus the appointment you inevitably have to move plus a comfortable gap before the wedding actually adds up to. Book at twelve months and you can treat the areas you want. Book at eight weeks and you are choosing between the least bad options.
If you got engaged this summer for a wedding next summer, you are in exactly the right window right now.
The countdown
12 months out. Consultation and patch test. This is also the moment to stop waxing, plucking, threading and epilating anywhere you might want treated. Laser needs the hair root intact, and waxing removes precisely the thing we are aiming at. Shaving is fine and stays fine throughout.
9 months out. You are into the course and hair is coming through finer and slower. Most people stop thinking about it around here, which is the correct way to do it.
6 months out. Review point. If something is being stubborn, usually a hormonal area like the chin or jawline, there is still room to adjust. Have this conversation in month two of a three month runway and there is not.
3 months out. Finishing sessions and moving to touch-ups. Adding a new area now means improved rather than finished by the wedding, and that is fine as long as you know it.
4 to 6 weeks out. Aim for your final session here. Skin can be pink or slightly raised straight after treatment, and shedding takes a week or two. You want all of that behind you.
The last two weeks. Nothing. Shave if you need to and leave your skin alone.
Work backwards from your earliest event, not the wedding day. If you have a hen do, a rehearsal dinner or a pre-wedding ceremony, that is your real deadline.
Less than a year? Here is what still works
Six months. Enough for a solid course on a focused list. Pick fewer areas and finish them rather than spreading thin across everything.
Three months. Be selective. Underarms and small facial areas respond quickly and matter disproportionately in a sleeveless dress and in close-up photographs.
Six weeks or less. Straight answer: you will see reduction, not a finished result. Starting now mostly benefits your honeymoon and your first year of marriage rather than the day itself. That is still a good reason. It is just not the reason you had in mind, and we would rather say so than take your money and let you find out.
Choosing areas: let the dress decide
Sleeveless or strapless: underarms. Small, responsive, and visible in every raised-arm photograph.
Backless or low back: back and shoulders. Almost always an afterthought until the first fitting.
Face: upper lip, chin, sideburns. Worth doing as much for how makeup sits as for the hair.
Arms and hands: especially if you are having mehendi, where hands and forearms are on display for hours and photographed constantly.
Legs, bikini or Hollywood: usually honeymoon-driven rather than ceremony-driven. If you are not sure which you want, Hollywood vs Brazilian sets out exactly what each covers.
If you are having a South Asian wedding
Multi-day celebrations create timing problems a single-day wedding does not, and most bridal laser guides skip them entirely.
Mehendi needs planning into the course. Laser targets pigment. Henna stains the skin because its active compound binds to keratin in the outer layer, which is why it lasts two weeks or more and will not scrub off. That makes a fresh henna design the same category of problem as a tattoo or fake tan: pigment sitting where the laser is looking. Plan your final sessions to finish clear of mehendi, and if any stain is still visible, say so rather than hoping.
Haldi and laser both heat the skin, and turmeric is mildly exfoliating on top of that. Stacking a haldi ceremony straight onto a laser session is asking for stinging and redness on skin that has other places to be. Leave a proper gap.
Multiple events means multiple photo days. Your "two weeks clear" rule applies to the first one.
Bring the whole schedule to your consultation, not just the wedding date. It genuinely changes the plan.
The four things that derail a bridal course
Waxing. The most common by a distance. A wax before a fitting or a hen do, halfway through a course, undoes the progress on that area. Shave instead, always.
Fake tan. Same principle as henna. It needs to be fully off before a session, and that includes gradual tanners you have stopped counting as tan.
The honeymoon nobody mentioned. Freshly treated skin and strong sun are a poor combination. This catches people out because the honeymoon was booked before the laser was. Give us the dates at consultation and we plan around them instead of discovering the clash in week five.
Medication changes. Some medicines increase photosensitivity, and wedding-year health changes are common. Tell us at every appointment if anything has changed, not just at the first one.

What to actually ask at your consultation
Bring your wedding date, your honeymoon dates and any pre-wedding ceremonies. Then ask:
- Given my date, what is realistically achievable and what is not?
- Which areas should I prioritise for my dress and my honeymoon?
- When should my final session be, working back from my earliest event?
- What happens if I need to move an appointment?
- How does my skin tone affect the plan, and which wavelength will you be using?
A clinic that answers all five without hedging is one that has done this before. If you want to know what the appointment itself involves, we have written it up: What Happens at Your First Consultation.
Grooms, and everyone else in the photographs
This is not only a bridal treatment and we would rather it was not framed as one.
Grooms most often ask about the back, chest, shoulders, and the neckline above a collar, which shows in every shot of the ceremony taken from behind. Beard line work is its own thing: Beard Sculpting with Laser Hair Removal.
Wedding parties book together more often than you would expect, usually because one person starts and mentions it. Everyone still needs their own consultation and patch test, because settings are individual, but appointments can be arranged around each other.
If you have deeper skin, or you have been turned away before
Worth a second opinion rather than a compromise on your own wedding.
If a clinic has told you laser is too risky for your skin tone, or that you must wait until winter, or that a tan rules you out for the season, that is a statement about their equipment. Nd:YAG 1064nm exists precisely for melanin-rich skin.
That does not make it automatic. Recent tanning still has to be declared and assessed, your patch test result still decides, and there will be times we tell you to wait. But "no" and "not with that machine" are different answers.

Frequently asked questions
How far before my wedding should I start laser hair removal?Ideally 9 to 12 months. That allows a full course, room for a rescheduled appointment, and a final session comfortably clear of your earliest wedding event.
Do I have to wait until winter to start laser hair removal? No. That advice comes from clinics whose equipment cannot safely treat tanned or melanin-rich skin. The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength is designed for melanin-rich skin, so timing becomes a conversation at consultation rather than a seasonal rule. Recent tanning still has to be declared and assessed.
Can I still start if my wedding is in three months?Yes, but be selective. Underarms and small facial areas will show meaningful improvement. Larger areas will be improved rather than finished.
When should my last session be?Four to six weeks before your earliest wedding event, not the wedding day itself. Skin can be pink after treatment and shedding takes a week or two.
Can I wax between laser sessions before my wedding? No. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating remove the hair root, which is what the laser targets. Shaving is fine throughout.
Can I have laser hair removal over henna or mehendi? No. Henna binds to the outer layer of skin and stains for two weeks or more, so it behaves like any other pigment sitting where the laser is aiming. Plan sessions clear of mehendi and tell your therapist if any stain remains.
Can I use fake tan during my laser course? Not before a session. It must be fully removed first, including gradual tanning products.
What about my honeymoon?Bring your travel dates to your consultation so sessions can be timed around the trip rather than into it.
Can grooms and the wedding party have laser too?Yes. Grooms most commonly treat the back, chest, shoulders and neckline. Everyone needs their own consultation and patch test, but appointments can be arranged around each other.
