Your First Laser Hair Removal Session: Everything You're Wondering
You've done the consultation. You've had the patch test. And now the big one is in the diary: your first full laser hair removal session. If your brain is quietly whispering "the patch test was fine, but a whole leg? A Hollywood? That's going to be different…" you're not alone. It's the single most common worry we hear between a patch test and a first session.
So this week, instead of just telling you it's fine, we're showing you. One of our clients filmed her entire first session at our London clinic nerves, gown, laser and all so you can see exactly what happens from a complete beginner's point of view. Then we're answering every question first-timers actually ask: the pain ones, the awkward ones, and the "wait, is this normal?" ones nobody warns you about.
(New to the journey? Start with her consultation and patch test — we've broken that whole first visit down in our first-timer's consultation guide.)
The short version (if you're in a hurry)
Your first session looks a lot like your consultation: a quick health form, a chat with your therapist, changing into a gown, then the treatment itself — with your therapist checking in on you the whole way through. The sensation? Our client described it as warmth and a light prickling on thicker-hair areas like the Hollywood and underarms… and her legs? In her words, "it genuinely feels like you're getting a massage."

Before your session: the one rule that confuses everyone
Here's the thing that trips up almost every first-timer, so let's clear it up properly:
- Before your consultation: don't shave your therapist needs to see your natural growth.
- Before your treatment sessions: do shave the areas being treated your therapist will confirm exact timing at your patch test.
It feels backwards, we know. But shaving before a session means the laser's energy goes into the hair root under the skin (where it works), not the hair above it. The rest of your prep checklist stays the same: no fake tan or recent sun exposure on the area, no waxing, plucking or epilating between sessions, and ease off strong actives like retinol and exfoliating acids on the treatment area in the days before — your therapist will give you exact guidance for your skin.
One more first-timer tip: wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. Your freshly treated skin will thank you on the way home — especially after underarms or a Hollywood.
What actually happens, step by step
1. The health form (yes, again and here's why)
The first thing that surprised our client: filling in the health form again, even though she'd done it at her consultation. This isn't admin for the sake of it. We re-check your form at every single visit to make sure nothing has changed new medications, new health conditions, anything that could affect your settings. Your treatment is only right if your information is current.
2. Gown on, nerves down
Your therapist walks you to the treatment room and steps out while you change into one of our Laser Me Out gowns (which, according to every client ever, are "so cute" — we don't make the rules). This is usually the peak-nerves moment for first-timers… and almost always the last one.
3. Dry brushing the step nobody expects
Before each area is treated, we do a quick dry brushing pass a signature Laser Me Out prep step that catches almost every first-timer off guard (in a good way). It preps the skin before the laser, gets circulation going, and clients consistently tell us it's one of the most relaxing parts of the whole session.
4. The laser itself
You'll pop on protective glasses, and then it begins and "it" is far less dramatic than the horror stories suggest. Here's the honest, area-by-area account from the video:
Hollywood and underarms the areas she was most nervous about turned out to be far easier than expected. With thicker hair you can feel a little more: she described it as heat with some light prickling, or a quick pinching sensation. Noticeable, yes. Painful? In her words genuinely no.
Legs the genuine surprise of the whole appointment. "It feels like a massage. It's so relaxing." She was so converted mid-session that she decided on the spot she wanted her legs done every time.
And running through all of it: your therapist checks in constantly. Is this okay? What level of sensation do you feel? I can turn it down or up. Your treatment is adjusted to you, in real time, the entire way through. That's part of why our Soprano technology has the reputation it does for being comfortable but it's the human side, the constant check-ins, that clients say makes the biggest difference.
"Okay, but the awkward questions…"
These are the things people search at 1am and never ask out loud. So let's just answer them.
Is a Hollywood embarrassing? This is the #1 unspoken fear and it evaporates about ninety seconds into your appointment. To your therapist, this is simply Tuesday. They treat these areas all day, every day, they position and cover you so you're never just lying there exposed, and there is zero judgement about your hair, your body, any of it. Our client put it best in the video: the therapist was "completely unfazed."
Can I come on my period? Yes just wear a tampon or menstrual cup if you're having a bikini or Hollywood treatment. Some people find they're a little more sensitive around their cycle, so if you'd rather move your appointment, that's completely fine too. No awkwardness either way.
What's that smell? During treatment you might catch a faint singed-hair smell. Totally normal it's just the hair above the skin reacting to the laser, and it doesn't linger.
Do I have to make conversation? Only if you want to. Some clients chat the whole way through; some put their headphones in and zone out. Both are perfect.
After your session: what's normal (and what nobody warns you about)
Redness and little bumps? Normal.
Straight after treatment, it's common for the area to look a bit pink, feel warm, or show small bumps around the follicles a bit like a mild sunburn or post-wax reaction. This is your skin responding to the heat at the follicle, it's a sign the treatment reached its target, and it typically settles within hours to a couple of days. Be gentle with the area, keep it cool, and it'll calm down on its own.
Your first 24–48 hours
A few simple rules to keep your skin happy:
- Showers: lukewarm or cool is fine skip hot showers, baths, saunas and steam rooms for the first 24–48 hours.
- Workouts: give the gym a miss for at least 24 hours. Sweat and friction on freshly treated skin is a recipe for irritation.
- Sun: treated skin is extra sensitive to UV. Keep it covered or wear SPF 30+ this one matters for protecting your results, not just comfort.
- Skincare: keep it simple. Gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturiser, and hold off on retinol, acids and scrubs on the area for a few days.
- Hands off: don't pick, scratch or exfoliate aggressively, even if it gets a little itchy.
Your therapist will run through all of this with you before you leave and you can always message us if you're unsure about anything.
The shedding phase: the part that makes everyone panic
Here's the thing nobody tells first-timers, and it causes more worried messages than everything else combined: a week or two after your session, it will look like your hair is growing back.
It isn't. What you're seeing is the treated hair being pushed out of the follicle it's dead, it's on its way out, and it's actually proof the treatment worked. Shedding usually starts around 7–10 days after your session and can continue for two to three weeks. Once the skin has fully settled, gentle exfoliation can help those hairs on their way. So before you fire off a panicked "it's all growing back!!" message check the calendar. If you're in the shedding window, your laser is doing exactly what it's supposed to.

Frequently asked questions
Does the first full session hurt more than the patch test? This is the worry almost everyone has and the video answers it honestly. Larger areas don't mean more pain; the sensation is the same as your patch test, just over a bigger area. Thicker-hair zones (Hollywood, underarms) can feel a little warmer or prickly; finer-hair areas like legs are often described as relaxing.
Which areas hurt the most and least?Areas with thicker, denser hair typically the Hollywood and underarms tend to be the most noticeable: think warmth and light prickling. Larger areas with finer hair, like legs and arms, are usually the easiest; many clients find them genuinely relaxing.
Does laser hurt less each time?Yes and this is the reassuring bit nobody mentions. The laser targets the pigment in your hair, so as your hair gets finer and sparser with each session, there's simply less for the laser to react to. Session one is the most you'll ever feel; it gets easier from there.
Do I need numbing cream? With our Soprano technology, the overwhelming majority of clients don't most describe warmth, not pain. And because your therapist adjusts the intensity in real time based on your feedback, the treatment stays within your comfort zone throughout.
Why do I have to fill in the health form every time? To make sure nothing has changed since your last visit medications, health conditions, anything that affects your settings. It keeps every single session safe and tailored to you.
Should I shave before my session? Yes, before treatment sessions, shave the areas being treated (your therapist will confirm timing). It's only the consultation you shouldn't shave before. And between sessions, shaving is the only hair removal you should use never wax, pluck, thread or epilate, as those remove the root the laser needs.
Is it normal for hair to "grow" after my session? Yes, and it isn't growth. It's the shedding phase: treated hairs working their way out of the follicle, usually starting 7–10 days after treatment and lasting up to two to three weeks. It's a sign the treatment worked.
Can I shower and train after my session? Lukewarm showers, yes. Hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms and sweaty workouts give it 24–48 hours. Heat, sweat and friction are the main irritants for freshly treated skin.
How many sessions will I need?It varies by area, hair type and skin tone, because hair grows in cycles and the laser only catches follicles in their active growth phase which is why sessions are spaced weeks apart. Your therapist will map out a realistic plan for you at your consultation, and you'll typically notice hair coming back finer, patchier and slower within the first few sessions.
How long does a session take?Less time than you'd think smaller areas take minutes, and even multiple areas fit comfortably into a lunch-break-sized appointment. Our client's biggest shock was how quick it was: "Damn, that was so quick."
How do I start?Every journey begins with a consultation and patch test it's quick, relaxed and pressure-free. You can book online in a couple of taps.
