Why the laser matters

The right laser, the right settings.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair. With darker skin there is more melanin in the skin as well, so an older or badly set laser can heat the skin instead of the follicle. That is where burns, marks and the idea that laser is not for darker skin come from.

The Soprano Titanium solves this with the 1064nm wavelength, which travels deeper and is absorbed less by skin pigment, plus contact cooling to protect the surface. Your patch test then confirms the settings before your first full treatment.

  • Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI, including Black and brown skin
  • 1064nm Nd:YAG for melanin-rich and tanned skin
  • Built-in contact cooling
  • Patch test before every first treatment
  • Fewer ingrowns and razor bumps as your course goes on

Dark skin questions

Laser on dark skin, answered.

Honest answers, before you book anything.

Is laser hair removal safe on dark skin?

Yes, when the laser and the settings are right for your skin. Our Soprano Titanium treats Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI, including Black and brown skin, and every first treatment follows a patch test at the settings we would use on you, so nothing is guesswork.

Which laser is best for dark skin?

The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is widely used for darker skin because it reaches the hair follicle while being absorbed less by the melanin in the surrounding skin. Our Soprano Titanium includes 1064nm alongside 755nm and 810nm, so your therapist can match the treatment to your skin and hair.

Can laser cause dark marks or burns on dark skin?

Any laser carries a small risk of temporary skin changes, which is exactly why we patch test first, use built-in contact cooling and match your settings rather than using an average. Your therapist will talk you through the risks and aftercare at your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

Six to eight sessions is the honest range for most people, for a 60 to 80 percent reduction. Coarse or hormonal hair can need more, and we tell you at your consultation before you pay for a course.

Can it help with ingrown hairs and razor bumps?

Many of our clients come to us for exactly this. As your hair reduces there is less to grow back into the skin, so most people notice fewer ingrowns and bumps as their course goes on, particularly on the beard line, neck and bikini line.

Do you treat men with darker skin?

Yes. Beard line, neck, back, shoulders and chest are all treated at every clinic, and the same patch test and settings approach applies.
